The father of a sick child confronted Boris Johnson during a hospital visit to Whipps Cross Hospital in northeast London. Violently criticising NHS cuts, Omar Salem, who is also a Labour activist, told the Prime Minister that “the NHS has been destroyed.”
He added that Johnson had “come here for a press opportunity.”
Johnson replied that “there’s no press here.” Omar consequently gestured towards cameras filming the heated exchange and asked “What do you mean there’s no press here, who are these people?”
A spokesperson of the PM later said that Johnson was visiting the hospital to get a better impression of the reality of challenges that the NHS is facing. Mr Johnson is"not going to hide away from those circumstances when he goes on these visits, and so obviously is keen to talk to people and empathise and see what he can do to help,” he said.
Social media users have reacted less enthusiastically about Johnson’s visit to the hospital.
