A major fire broke out in Metz late Monday evening, sending flames shooting from the roof of a building near the railway line on Rue du Graoully in the Sablon neighbourhood.

The blaze startled residents and required approximately 40 firefighters to bring under control.

Metz Mayor François Grosdidier confirmed the fire originated in the building’s roof. While investigators have yet to determine the cause, authorities have not ruled out the possibility of arson.

Despite the intensity of the fire, emergency crews prevented any casualties. However, several residents have been displaced and will require temporary housing as a result of the incident.
