The parking lot belonged to a hospital situated right next to it. There was a power outage as a result of the collapse, but the hospital continued its work on backup generators.

Dozens of firefighters immediately began search and rescue operations looking for survivors, but as of yet there have been no casualties.

The hospital’s coronavirus ward had to be evacuated as there was no hot water or electricity. “There are six patients, so the problem is manageable”, said Vincenzo de Luco, govenor of Naples. “We need a few days to restore the water supply, carry out checks and make the building safe again. We better take advantage of that now, with a peak expected in mid-January.”

Campania regional head Vincenzo De Luca blamed the hole on a 'hydro-geological problem'.

De Luca says it is fortunate that it was a car park and not “a building where human lives and important technical facilities would have been affected”.

He announced geological surveys in the affected area and in the immediate vicinity to check on the soil.
