A fire ravaged a building in western Manhattan on Tuesday before being quickly brought under control by firefighters, who report three minor injuries, including one of their own.
The fire broke out early in the morning on the top floor of a six-story building in the Upper West Side neighborhood.
A large number of firefighters rushed to the scene to put it out, and the neighborhood’s streets were closed to traffic.
“Our units arrived on the scene in just over three minutes. It’s an extremely impressive response time,” said Chief of Operations Kevin Woods during a press briefing at the site.
He stated that the two residents of the building who were injured were located—one on the roof and the other on the third floor. All other residents had evacuated after the fire started. The cause of the blaze is not yet known.
The evacuated residents were taken care of by emergency services in buses provided by the city’s transit authority. In New York, temperatures were at -8°C early in the morning.
