
ASSELBORN HOSPITAL - Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn remains in hospital, days after he was hospitalised due to an influenza type A virus infection. The 73-year-old politician is being treated at the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg. His fever has stabilized and is tending to drop in a positive sign of recovery, his ministry said yesterday. Asselborn is one of Luxembourg’s most popular politicians, in November earning the approval of three-quarters of the country’s voters in the most Politmonitor survey.
DRUG SHORTAGE - Demand for an anti-diabetic drug has increased in Europe as well as Luxembourg, triggering a shortage. Ozempic, a diabetes medication, is also used to help people lose weight but it is not authorised for use as a weight loss cure. But the National Health Directorate has noticed that the demand for Ozempic has increased recently, probably because of its so-called “off-label” use for weight loss. This has resulted in a shortage across Europe.
FILM FESTIVAL - The Luxembourg City Film Festival kicks off today, lasts until the 12 March, with screenings at cinemas and cultural venues around the capital. Nine films are in the official competition, including 3 Luxembourg co-productions. In addition, there are also 6 documentary films in a competition. In addition to the traditional events such as workshops, masterclasses and live Q&A sessions, this year the Luxembourg City Film Festival will launch their all new Late Night Bizarre by Kinepolis. GREECE TRAIN ACCIDENT - Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis says a team of experts will investigate the country’s worst-ever rail disaster, which has killed at least 43 people. He said human error was probably to blame. Rail workers say the network has been suffering from neglect and technical faults. A station master on duty is to testify today to explain how a passenger train with over 350 people on board was allowed to run on the same line as a freight train for several kilometres.
G20 MEETING - Foreign ministers from the G20 group of major economies are meeting in the Indian capital Delhi, with Russia and western countries expected to condemn each other over the war in Ukraine. India, which holds the G20 presidency and has taken a neutral position on the conflict, hopes to bridge the significant divisions. Germany says it will oppose any propaganda from Moscow, whilst America’s Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has already announced he will not meet his counterparts from Russia and China.
ATHLETICS - The European Indoor Athletics Championship starts today in Istanbul. Luxembourg’s runner Charel Grethen will not take part in the 1500 meters this evening as he has a cold and wants to save himself for the 3000 meters on Saturday.In the women’s race, Vera Hoffmann will take part in the 1500 meters, and Patrizia Van der Weken is expected to compete in the 60 meters.
FOOTBALL - In the English Premier League Arsenal has won 4-0 against Everton and Liverpool beat Wolverhampton 2-0. And in the French Cup there was quite a surprise, Marseille lost in the quarter-finals, in the penalty shootout, against Annecy from the Second League.
It may only be the second day of March, but so far the third month of the year has brought us nothing but sunny weather. Today will be no different, as clear and bright skies are expected throughout the day, only growing darker as night falls. Not only is the sun out, the temperatures are climbing too. Morning temperatures will start off at -3 to 0°C, before climbing to 5-9°C in the afternoon.
