Portugal, like much of Europe, has been suffering from a severe heatwave with wildfires spreading across the south of the continent.

Tukayana took to the A1 motorway towards Aveiro in the country’s north to capture a wildfire on camera, but admitted that he “did not expect this situation”.

On both sides of the road, flames shot several metres high into the air, creating a “dangerous” tunnel of fire. Tukayana decided to close the windows of his car to keep out the heat and smoke.

Luckily, he managed to reach his exit.

During this week’s heat wave, many regions of Portugal have recorded temperatures of up to 40°C, with the mercury exceeding 45°C in places.

Fanned by the heat, fires have left at least one person dead and around 60 injured, while 860 people have been evacuated and around sixty homes damaged or destroyed.

According to data from the European Forest Fire Information System, the fires have covered around 13,500 hectares in the past few days.
