
SUSPICIOUS BAGS - According to the police, 2-3 small bags with a suspicious substance have been found in a bus transporting school children in Rosport. Around 70 people, most of whom were mostly children, were isolated as a precaution. A decontamination procedure was carried out for around half a dozen children who were thought to have come in contact with the bags. Although analyses are still being carried out, it currently appears that the bags did not contain a dangerous substance.
DRUG REPORT - The Ministry of Health has released its annual report on the state of drug consumption. While there was a general downward trend in fatal overdoses in 2022, the report notes an increase in cocaine consumption. Overall, the drug report considers 2,160 people to be at high risk regarding their drug use. 69 percent of all drug addicts are addicted to cocaine, while 64 percent are addicted to heroin.
LOUD BANGS - Many people have been wondering why several loud explosions were heard in southern Luxembourg on Monday afternoon. The police have confirmed to RTL that the French military was in the middle of an aerial exercise near the Luxembourgish border. This type of explosion is caused when an aircraft breaks the sound barrier.
CITY BEACH - And Luxembourg’s City centre is once again poised to be a summer destination as the popular ‘Théâterplage’ - the ‘Theatre Beach’ - returns for another season of sun-soaked fun. Since its inception in 2019, the urban beach retreat has attracted an enthusiastic crowd with its unique beach-inspired setting right in the heart of the capital. This year it will open on Thursday, the 6th July until the 4 September.
US SHOOTING - A gunman wearing a bulletproof vest opened fire on the streets of Philadelphia last night, killing four people and wounding two boys in the latest outbreak of gun violence in the United States. According to the police, the victims were apparently random with no connection known between them and the shooter. America has now endured 339 mass shootings so far this year.
ISRAEL MILITARY OPERATION - Palestinian officials say about 3000 people have fled their homes in the Jenin refugee camp since Israel launched a major military operation in the occupied West Bank. At least 8 Palestinians have been killed.
FRANCE PROTESTS - After the escalation of violence in recent days, the situation in France is calming down again. Today, President Macron will speak to the mayors of around 300 municipal areas that have been affected by the violence, following the shooting of teenager Nahel M during a police traffic stop. Among other things, they will discuss financial support for the repairs to public buildings that were damaged. Over 3,400 people have been arrested in recent days and the economic damage is estimated at over one billion euros.
CYCLING - it’s the fourth stage in the Tour de France today, around 182 km from Dax to Nogaro, including a sprint. Belgian sprint ace Jasper Philipsen demonstrated his speed skills by winning the third stage of the Tour de France on Monday. British cyclist Adam Yates retains the overall lead.
TENNIS - Novak Djokovic launched his bid for an eighth Wimbledon title on Monday with a 40th successive win on Centre Court while American stars Coco Gauff and Venus Williams were knocked out. The 36-year-old Djokovic, who has won the past four titles at the All England Club, defeated 68th-ranked Pedro Cachin of Argentina, 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).
FOOTBALL - Newcastle have confirmed the signing of AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali for a reported £60 million fee, roughly 70 million euros, that will make the 23-year-old the most expensive Italian player of all time. Tonali, who joined Milan in 2020, helped the club to their first Serie A title in a decade in 2022 and to the semi-finals of the Champions League last season.
