
A 67-year-old motorist sparked a large-scale police operation on Thursday evening after driving the wrong way on the A1 motorway near Wittlich, Germany, with a blood alcohol level of no less than 2.35‰.
Multiple drivers reported the intoxicated motorist travelling the wrong way between Wittlich and the Vulkaneifel junction toward Trier around 9pm.
A 35-year-old driver from the Bremen area narrowly avoided a head-on collision by swerving at the last moment.
Authorities deployed multiple patrol cars to slow traffic and locate the wrong-way vehicle.
Police intercepted the Ahrweiler resident at approximately 9.50pm near a rural access road. Breathalyser tests confirmed the driver’s extreme intoxication, prompting officers to obtain a blood sample for further analysis.
Police also discovered the individual had been driving without a valid licence. The vehicle was immediately impounded.
