EU UKRAINE - EU defence ministers are meeting in Sweden today to discuss EU military support and the procurement of ammunition for Ukraine. Luxembourg is represented by the Minister of Defence Francois Bausch. The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is in Kyiv today and is expected to meet President Zelensky this morning. They will discuss the agreement between Russia and Ukraine on an extension of the grain export deal, which expires on March 19.

NORD-STREAM ATTACKS - A pro-Ukrainian sabotage group is said to be behind the sabotage of the Nord-Stream gas pipelines last year. This has reported by various media. The adviser to the Ukrainian president has however emphasized that Ukraine had nothing to do with the attack.

Luxembourg

WORK ACCIDENT - A worker was run over by a lorry on a construction site in Niederfeulen yesterday morning. The 56-year-old man did not survive the accident and succumbed to his injuries on site.

IWD - It is International Women’s Day. In this context, the world is mobilizing and raising awareness for women’s rights and against inequalities. Also in Luxembourg. A demonstration, organised by the feminist group JIF is calling for more reception and care structures for women in need, including people who are homeless, or domestic violence victims. The march starts tonight at 5pm at Hamilius.

PETITIONS - There will be another public debate on a petition in the Chamber this morning. This calls for better access to “medical imaging”, such as MRIs, scans and mammograms. Since yesterday, another 14 new petitions have gone online. They include petitions on an age limit of 65 years for a political mandate, parental leave for one parent during the school holidays, reversing the ban on internal combustion engines from 2035 and that Valentine’s Day should be a statutory holiday. The entire list can be found on petitions.lu.

CARDINAL HOLLERICH - Pope Francis has appointed the Luxembourgish Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich to the Council of Cardinals, which was formed to aid in the reform of the Catholic church’s governance. The Catholic Church in Luxembourg issued a statement congratulating itself on the appointment of Luxembourg’s archbishop, who was made a cardinal in 2019.

Sports

HANDBALL - The Luxembourg national handball team will play against Turkey tonight in the qualification for the European Championship. It starts at 7 o’clock in the Coque sports centre.

FOOTBALL - In the Champions League, Benfica and Chelsea are in the quarter-finals. Benfica won 5-1 against Bruges last night. Chelsea beat Dortmund 2-0. Tonight, AC Milan travels to Tottenham with a 1-0 advantage.

And staying with football, Jurgen Klinsmann says he wants to win the Asian Cup after landing in South Korea earlier today to take over the men’s national side. The former Germany, Bayern Munich and United States coach succeeds Paulo Bento, who took the Koreans to the last 16 of the World Cup in Qatar.

Today is still set to be cold and overcast, with snowfall forecast across the country. There is already a white coat of snow covering a large part of the north of Luxembourg.The snowflakes are likely to turn to rain in the afternoon, with fairly chilly winds persisting throughout the day. Morning temperatures start off between -1 and 2°C, before rising to 1-5°C in the afternoon.
