Pope Francis appointed the Luxembourgish cardinal to the council, which was formed to aid in the reform of the Catholic church's governance.
Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich will become a member of the Council of Cardinals, which was recently reorganised by Pope Francis.
The Catholic Church in Luxembourg issued a statement congratulating itself on the appointment of Luxembourg's archbishop, who was made a cardinal in 2019.
The Council of Cardinals serves as the Pope's advisory council and was established to aid in the reform of the Roman-Catholic church's governance.
The council was created in 2013 and has nine members.
