Forensic analysis is underway to determine if human remains discovered in Australia are those of Céline Cremer, a 31-year-old Belgian woman reported missing in Tasmania in June 2023.

The remains were located on Wednesday by a hiker who had volunteered to search for Cremer. Australian police have notified the missing woman’s family and confirmed that the individual who made the discovery had been dedicated to the search effort for some time.

Cremer was last seen in the town of Waratah on 17 June 2023. Her vehicle was later found on 27 June at a trailhead in the Tarkine rainforest. Authorities believe she intended to take a day walk near Philosopher’s Falls around 20 June – the same day her mobile phone last transmitted a signal. According to police, she had left her car “equipped for a short walk”.

An official search was suspended three weeks later in July 2023, with authorities concluding that the cold and wet conditions in the remote area made survival unlikely.
