
WEATHER ALERT – Luxembourg weather agency Meteolux has raised a yellow weather warning for the south of the country this afternoon, warning of scorching temperatures above 31°C between 3pm and 6pm.
AGRICULTURE – Winegrowers in Luxembourg are hopeful that this year’s yield to be of high quality. This spring, the weather was not particularly kind to winegrowers, as late frosts and persistent rain marked a challenging start to the year.
Bernard Karl, the technical director of the Domaines Vinsmoselle cooperative said the weather conditions were “far from ideal” and the winegrowers were “challenged”.
ONGOING CONTROVERSY – As the Schueberfouer gets into full swing, a regulation concerning minor labour has once again drawn attention. According to an addition to the Labour Code, “itinerant trade” in public spaces, including fairs like the Schueberfouer, is prohibited for minors. The Inspectorate of Labour and Mines has reminded stall operators of these rules through a brochure that has been issued.
LATE LAWMAKER – The funeral of Max Hengel, the late MP and Mayor of Wormeldange, will take place tomorrow in Wormeldange Church. Following the service, attendees are invited to a moment of remembrance for Mr Hengel at the Wormeldange Cultural Centre, where they can also sign the remembrance book. Mr Hengel, who was 47, died on 17 August following a prolonged illness.
TRAGIC ACCIDENT – Two German boys have died after being buried by a dune landslide at a beach in Denmark, police have said. The children, aged nine and 12, were digging a hole on a beach in North Jutland on Sunday when the dune collapsed. Media reports said the boys, who were on holiday with their families from the Munich area, were trapped under the sand for up to 40 minutes during efforts to dig them out.
MPOX – The African Union’s health watchdog on Wednesday said it was close to securing almost one million mpox vaccine doses, urging manufacturers to share the vaccine-making technology to battle the disease. Africa is on the front line of the fight against mpox, with the World Health Organization declaring an international emergency earlier this month over the viral disease’s spread. Several countries have promised to send vaccines to African countries hit by outbreaks, with Spain alone pledging 500,000 doses.
Temperatures will start off at 15–17°C this morning, rising to highs of 28°C in northern regions, or 31°C in the south. In the evening, they will drop slightly to 23–25°C with the possibility of rain later this evening.
