GOVERNMENT COUNCIL - Luc Frieden has announced a timetable for implementing the government programme and said the first legislative project, aimed at bolstering purchasing power, will be discussed in the government council this morning. In addition, the new prime minister has his first appointments abroad this week. Tomorrow he will be in Paris to meet French President Macron and several other EU heads of government. In addition, he is set to meet EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and travel to Rotterdam for a Benelux summit.

AMPACET STRIKE - This morning sees a strike at Ampacet Luxembourg, the American plastics company based in Dudelange. ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - In principle, the four-day truce in Gaza is coming to an end and it’s the last day to exchange Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners and to bring humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. However, talks to extend the temporary ceasefire are in full swing. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Hamas are ready to do so. However, the Israeli military fears that their offensive would then lose momentum. And Hamas could regroup. So far around 117 Palestinian prisoners have been released by Israel while Hamas has freed 40 Israeli hostages in exchange.

FRANCE TRIAL - Six teenagers go on trial in Paris today for their role in the 2020 beheading of teacher Samuel Paty, the first of two trials in a case that horrified France. The 47-year-old history and geography teacher was stabbed and then beheaded near his secondary school in the Paris suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine. His attacker, 18-year-old ethnic Chechen refugee Abdoullakh Anzorov, was shot dead at the scene by police.

COP28 BIDEN - President Joe Biden will miss the latest UN climate summit in Dubai, after two years of attending the talks. Some 70,000 people including national leaders and Pope Francis are expected at COP28 as it opens on Thursday, in what could be the largest United Nations climate summit ever. Schedules released by the White House for Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris showed neither heading to Dubai this week.

BOOKER PRIZE - Irish author Paul Lynch has won the 2023 Booker Prize for fiction for his novel “Prophet Song,” a dystopian work about an Ireland that descends into tyranny. He becomes the fifth Irish writer to win the high-profile literary prize.

FORMULA 1 - Max Verstappen has completed a record-breaking season in familiar style on Sunday when he cruised to a record-increasing 19th win of the year for Red Bull at an action-packed Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The three-time world champion came home 17.993 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Verstappen ended the season as the only driver to complete every lap of the season, more than 1000 laps led.

FOOTBALL - Some results from international football: In the Bundesliga, Hoffenheim and Mainz drew 1-1. In Italy, Juventus and Inter Milan also drew 1-1. Manchester United beat Everton 3-0 in the Premier League. And in France, Lille won 2-0 against Lyon.
