HOMICIDE RECONSTRUCTION - A reconstruction of the events surrounding a homicide committed on a football pitch in Esch-sur-Alzette took place yesterday, in the presence of the three accused. The murder of a 25-year-old man in January happened after the deceased man verbally abused and attempted to physically assault several players and coaches during a training session for minors. He was chased off by several people and stabbed. The latter was seriously injured as a result and later died of his injuries in a hospital.

PETROL PRICES - Super unleaded petrol has gone up in cost overnight. The price per litre of SP 98 petrol has risen 1.6 cents, taking it to €1.77 per litre. Just three weeks ago, super unleaded petrol dropped by 3 cents. SP 95 petrol remains unchanged, while diesel is the cheapest fuel currently at €1.44 per litre.

POLICE BILLS - In parliament yesterday, two bills concerning the police received the green light. One regulates the use of the body-cams. The second bill sees an investment of 86 million euros into the police. This will enable the purchase of two police helicopters in the next 15 years.

PHONES SCHOOLS - Following the recent partial restriction on mobile phone and tablet use at Lycée Ermesinde in Mersch, the Ministry of Education has told RTL it sees no reason for a general ban on mobile phones in schools. The use of mobile phones during lessons is already prohibited in all schools by Grand Ducal regulation.

World

UKRAINE NATO - Western powers will propose long-term security commitments for Ukraine today after NATO dashed President Volodymyr Zelensky’s hopes of a clear timeline for joining the alliance. Zelensky will hold symbolic talks with NATO’s 31 leaders at their summit in Vilnius, a day after blasting them for not moving faster to bring Ukraine into the fold. In a bid to reassure the Ukrainian leader, the G7 group of nations are expected to issue a declaration on how they will help Kyiv defeat Russia and deter any new aggression in the coming years.

MISSING TODDLER - French police searching for a two-year-old boy who went missing from his grandparents’ garden in the French Alps on Saturday have said they still have no clues as to what has happened to him. The boy, called Emile, was last seen walking down the street by two witnesses on Saturday. Police and gendarmes have entered every building in the settlement and some 500 volunteers have also helped with the search, looking for Emile in the forests and fields that surround the village.

ARETHA WILL - A jury has ruled that a 2014 document found in Aretha Franklin’s couch after her death is a valid will to her multi-million dollar estate. The 2-day trial pitted her children against each other in a battle over two handwritten versions of the singer’s final wishes. In the will, now valid, three sons will evenly split her music royalties and bank funds while the youngest child Kecalf and his grandchildren will inherit his mother’s primary residence.

FOOTBALL - Luxembourg teams are in action at European level. In the first round of the Champions League qualification, Swift Hesperange is playing Slovan Bratislava.The return match is next week. In the qualification for the Conference League, F91 Dudelange will face the Irish team St Patricks Athletic at home.

CYCLING - it’s Stage 11 in the Tour de France today. Over 180 kilometers from Clermont-Ferrand to Moulins. The 10th stage yesterday was won by Spaniard Pello Bilbao. Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard remains the overall leader.

SEMANYA COURT - Champion runner Caster Semenya has won a landmark decision for sports when the European Court of Human Rights ruled she was discriminated against by rules in track and field that force her to medically reduce her natural hormone levels to compete in major competitions. Semanya is hyperandrogenous - meaning she has naturally high levels of testosterone – and has been fighting against World Athletics rules, which regulate levels of the hormone in female athletes.

BOXING - WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury will fight Mixed Martial Arts star Francis Ngannou in a boxing contest to decide “the baddest man on the planet” in Saudi Arabia on October 28.Fury’s team said the fight in Riyadh will “take place under the official rules of professional boxing, with three judges ringside adopting the 10-point must system”.

After thunderstorms and strong winds overnight, today promises to be somewhat calmer.The skies will be largely overcast throughout the day, with a chance of sun peeking through in the afternoon. Those pesky winds will pick up as the day progresses, with gusts of up to 50km/h expected after midday. Overall, today is likely to be dry after the night’s rain.Temperatures start off at 17-19°C in the morning, rising to 23-25°C in the afternoon.
