Noah Woods, a five-year-old living in Bartow County, Georgia, woke up to find his bedroom on fire earlier in the week. Instead of panicking, as one might reasonably expect a young child to do, Noah pulled his two-year-old sister out of the window - the only available exit - before returning to rescue the family dog.

Instead of then returning to the house, the ever-sensible five-year-old then went next door to wake his uncle up to alert the rest of the family. The entire family made it out safely, with Noah and four other family members being treated for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

The Bartow County Fire Department, writing on Facebook, described Noah as their hero and announced plans to recognise the young boy as an honorary firefighter and present him with a lifesaving award usually reserved for professional rescuers.
