Four dead

German police have released updates on the accident on the B51 between Bitburg and Trier in November. Four people lost their lives following a collision between a car and a lorry, despite emergency teams rushing to the scene.

The accident took place on a busy stretch of road, which was closed for a lengthy period of time following the crash. Extensive traffic diversions ensued, which caused bigger issues in the wider area.

Investigators were unable to immediately determine the reason for the crash at the time of the incident.

Accident cause not yet explained

The main reason for the crash has yet to be determined following the conclusion of the investigation. Police said there were no clear indicators that a distraction, evasive manoeuvre or other external influence had caused the accident. Witness accounts also failed to shed light on the circumstances that led to the collision.

Both the lorry and car involved were subjected to technical examinations, but no mechanical defects were found. There were no issues with the brakes or steering or any other safety equipment.

Seatbelt could have prevented fatal consequences

However, the investigation did reveal that the lorry driver had not been wearing his seatbelt when the accident took place. According to experts, the seatbelt could likely have prevented the fatal consequences of the crash, as the lorry driver’s injuries were largely due to him not being secured in his seat.

The investigation is mostly concluded, as all documents have been supplied by experts and assessors. However, the police emphasised that any accident of this severity is an opportunity to critically examine one’s own driving style and personal safety behaviour.
