
BETTEL EU - EU Foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels today. The war in the Middle East and Ukraine are the main topics. Luxembourg will be represented by Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel.
CARGO CENTER - According to Cargolux CEO Richard Forson, no one will lose their job at the cargo center. Speaking to RTL, Forson said the collective agreement would be respected and the company would also look for solutions to some issues, such as flight tickets for staff. Through its new subsidiary company Luxcargo, Cargolux is taking over the cargo handling of Luxair at Findel and the contracts of the Luxair Cargo workers. Cargolux would like to invest a three-digit million amount in the infrastructure of the cargo center in the next few years.
LUXEMBOURG EUROVISION - Today Radio will be the first place to find out who’s going to be in the Luxembourg Song Contest finals on 27 January, the winner of which will go on to represent Luxembourg as we return to Eurovision after a 30-year break! UKRAINE WAR - Volodymr Zelensky says he had a frank discussion with his Hungarian counterpart Victor Orban, when they attended the inauguration of Argentina’s new president on Sunday. Orban has threatened to block European Union plans to begin formal accession talks for Ukraine. Ukraine shot down 8 Russian missiles this morning. The missiles were heading towards the capital city of Kyiv. Zelensky is expected in Washington tomorrow for a meeting with US President Biden and plead his case for more money for his fight against Russia.
ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - Diplomats at the UN say the General Assembly is likely to vote on Tuesday for another call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The outcome would not be binding. Meanwhile Israel has been bombing southern Gaza’s main city this morning after Hamas warned no Israeli hostages would leave the territory alive unless its demands for prisoner releases were met. Israel says there are still 137 hostages in Gaza, while activists say around 7,000 Palestinians are in Israeli jails.
FOOTBALL - Starting with some football results, in Germany, Mainz and Cologne drew 0-0 and Stuttgart and Leverkusen drew 1-1. Leverkusen and Stuttgart are the two favourites to win the cup this year, with both Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund already out of the running.
In France, Metz lost 0-1 against Brest.
In the English Premier League, Tottenham beat Newcastle 4-1. And in Spain, Girona won 4-2 against Barcelona, and is now the new table leader.
In national football, Differdange is the autumn champion ahead of Dudelange and Hesper. Now it’s the winter break until February 11.
BASKETBALL - Bronny James, the 19-year-old son of NBA superstar LeBron James, made his collegiate basketball debut on Sunday less than five months after suffering cardiac arrest during practice.With his famous father sitting courtside and catching the action on his cellphone, Bronny James played 16 minutes, scoring four points with three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
It seems we will be getting some time off from the rainy weather of late, as we welcome the return of our traditionally cloudy skies. We might even get a cheeky peek at the sun, if we’re lucky! Be mindful of the wind, though, as gusts could still reach up to 50 km/h throughout the day. Not much will change temperature-wise, with the minimum starting around 7 degrees, up to a slightly warmer 11 degrees maximum in the afternoon.
