
GREENPEACE COP 16 – As representatives prepare to gather in Colombia for the UN Biodiversity Conference summit today, Greenpeace Luxembourg has argued despite commitments from the EU and also Luxembourg to halt biodiversity loss, current measures remain insufficient. The organisation is calling for new legislation to prevent the financing of environmentally harmful businesses and to align the financial sector with international climate and biodiversity targets.
GERMANY ACCIDENT – A fatal accident occurred in Germany yesterday on the B410 between Prüm and Gerolstein. According to police, a car swerved into the opposite lane and immediately hit three other cars. The driver of the car was seriously injured, while his passenger did not survive the impact. The 76-year-old passenger in another car was also killed instantly. Three more people were injured.
FRANCE BORDER CONTROLS – Starting from 1 November, border checks will be reinstated between France and Luxembourg for a minimum duration of six months. In an interview with RTL, Interior Minister Léon Gloden has reassured that the checks would be similar to those during the Olympic Games last summer, noting that there were no significant traffic jams at that time. Gloden is scheduled to speak with the French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau this week.
ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN – The police have launched the winter road safety campaign. The “Wanterzäit 2024" campaign is accompanied by nationwide checks until the end of December, with a preventive phase targeting vehicle lighting until 17 November. This means that drivers won’t be fined for damaged vehicle lighting during this phase, as long as they ensure the vehicle is in line with the legislation and report this to a police unit within five days.
MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT – Around 32,000 people took to the streets in Brussels yesterday to call for a ceasefire in the Middle East. The demonstrators called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the release of all prisoners and the protection of civilians. Also among their demands was for the next Belgian government to take the initiative to impose a comprehensive international military embargo. Meanwhile, the Israeli military is continuing to bomb targets in Beirut, including the bombing of branches of a bank that it says is supporting Hezbollah.
MOLDOVA ELECTION – Moldova’s president looks set to win the first round of a presidential race but has accused “criminal groups” of undermining a referendum asking voters to decide whether to secure a path towards EU membership. With 97% of the vote counted, a tiny majority has voted no. Analysts say the “yes” camp could still prevail because the largely pro-EU diaspora’s ballots are yet to be counted.
HURRICANE OSCAR – Hurricane Oscar has made landfall in Cuba, as the country grapples with a nearly nationwide power outage in its third day. Nothing is known about damage yet but millions of people have no electricity since Friday.
COP 16 – World leaders, environmental activists and prominent researchers are meeting in Cali, Colombia for a UN biodiversity summit that experts say will be decisive for the fate of the world’s rapidly declining wildlife populations. The aim of the conference is to implement the global nature conservation agreement made in Montreal two years ago. Among the targets is to protect 30% of the earth and land by 2030 and cutting global food waste in half.
FOOTBALL – Starting off with some results from the weekend: In the Bundesliga Bremen beat Wolfsburg 4-2 and Union Berlin won 2-0 in Kiel. In the English Premier League, Liverpool beat Chelsea 2-1 and remains the table leader.
In France, Marseille beat Montpellier 5-0 and in Italy, Inter Milan won 1-0 at AS Rome.
TENNIS – The final of the Luxembourg Ladies Tennis Masters took place at the Coque in Kirchberg yesterday, with Swiss former world number 1 Martina Hingis facing Belgian competitor Kirsten Flipkens. After one set in favor of each player, the decision was taken to a Super Tiebreak, where Flipkens managed to secure victory against Martina Hingis with a score of 10-7.
FORMULA 1 – Charles Leclerc has led Ferrari to a dominant one-two finish at the United States Grand Prix, securing his first win in the US and the team’s first one-two in America since 2006.
After a cloudy start, it should clear up with some sun peeking through the clouds by mid-mid morning and sticking around until late afternoon. All in all we are in for a nice, dry, autumnal day.
