The Grand Ducal Police are emphasising the visibility and technical condition of vehicles.
Both visibility and technical safety are essential, particularly in this season of fog, rain, and cold. Poor visibility is a major factor in accidents, which is why the police are urging drivers and other road users to stay extra vigilant.
Equally, frost and reduced light can complicate traffic conditions, making it all the more essential to ensure that your vehicle is in good technical condition, especially when it comes to tyres and lighting.
The "Wanterzäit 2024" campaign is accompanied by nationwide checks until the end of December, with a preventive phase targeting vehicle lighting until 17 November. This means that drivers won't be fined for damaged vehicle lighting during this phase, as long as they ensure the vehicle is in line with the legislation and report this to a police unit within five days. Failure to do so will result in a taxed warning or penalty notice.
The police stress three main points:
- 'See and be seen': In terms of general road safety, it is vital that drivers are vigilant and make sure they can see what is going on around them. Make sure that lights are working and that the vehicle windows are clear. As a pedestrian, runner or cyclist, be visible to other road users, even from a distance.
- Technical condition of vehicles: Vehicles must be in perfect technical condition. The tyres should be suitable to the weather conditions and a clear field of vision should be guaranteed.
- Safe distance and driving style: A safe distance from the vehicle in front, a driving style adapted to the weather conditions and compliance with speed limits are also essential.
