Fifteen Luxembourg firefighters departed for Gironde, southwestern France, on Thursday, 30 July, to assist French colleagues in battling ongoing wildfires. Their deployment comes as part of a collaborative effort with a team from the Moselle region, following a request for international support.
According to a recent post on the CGDIS Facebook page, the Luxembourg contingent quickly integrated into the firefighting operations upon arrival. They were assigned to a fire brigade column from the French "Grand Est" region, with responsibilities that include patrolling large sectors and containing new outbreaks. Each day, the team is given a different area spanning several hectares, where they focus on extinguishing active flames, smouldering embers, and working in other hot spots to prevent flare-ups.
In the evenings, the firefighters conduct patrols to monitor the area and ensure that no fires reignite unnoticed during the night, providing essential overnight vigilance.
CGDIS praised the exemplary cooperation with their French counterparts, highlighting the vital role of local community support in the ongoing firefighting effort.
