
POLITMONITOR SURVEY – Prime Minister Luc Frieden has emerged as the biggest loser in the latest Politmonitor survey conducted by Ilres on behalf of RTL and the Luxemburger Wort. Compared to the previous poll from November/December 2024, the Prime Minister and CSV president has lost 10 points in perceived sympathy and competence, dropping from fourth to eighth place. Despite losses, the Democratic Party (DP) remains the most represented in the top 10 with five politicians. At the top of the ranking is Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Xavier Bettel, who gains two points, reaching a 79% approval rate.
UKRAINIAN REP IN LUXEMBOURG – Ukrainian Parliament Chairman Ruslan Stefanchuk became the first foreign legislative leader to deliver an address in Luxembourg’s Chamber of Deputies yesterday afternoon. The Ukrainian leader emphasised three key priorities for ongoing support: continued increase of international pressure on Russia, sustained Luxembourgish backing for Ukraine’s EU and NATO membership bids, and further military and humanitarian assistance.
PETROL PRICES – Tensions in the oil market are slowly but surely making their way to Luxembourg, with the prices of unleaded 95 and 98 petrol rising today. Unleaded 98 will rise to €1.47 per litre (+1.8 cents), and unleaded 95 – the most commonly sold petrol – will climb to €1.58 (+1.4 cents).
GLOBAL LIVEABILITY INDEX – Luxembourg City has climbed six places to 11th in the 2025 Global Liveability Index, just missing the top 10. The index assesses cities worldwide, based on factors such as stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Copenhagen topped the ranking, followed closely by Vienna and Zurich.
ISRAEL-IRAN CONFLICT – Iran and Israel have launched new missile strikes at each other earlier today as the air war between the two longtime enemies enters a sixth day, despite a call from US President Donald Trump for Tehran’s unconditional surrender.
GAZA WAR – Israeli tanks fired into a crowd trying to get aid from trucks in Gaza yesterday, killing at least 59 people, according to medics, in one of the bloodiest incidents yet, as desperate residents struggle for food.
G7 – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky left the G7 summit on Tuesday with new aid from host Canada for its war against Russia but said diplomacy is in “crisis”, having missed the chance to press US President Donald Trump for more weapons. The G7 nations struggled to find unity over the conflict in Ukraine, after Trump expressed support for Russian President Vladimir Putin and left a day early to address the Israel-Iran conflict from Washington.
UKRAINE WAR – Russia has flattened a section of an apartment block in Kyiv, its deadliest attack on the Ukrainian capital this year, as a huge barrage of hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles killed at least 18 people and wounded 151. Ukrainian officials have declared a day of mourning today for the victims.
ACADEMY AWARDS – US actor and film producer Tom Cruise will receive an honorary Oscar ahead of the 2026 Academy Awards, marking a career first for the Hollywood veteran. Dolly Parton will also be awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her decades-long humanitarian work.
FOOTBALL – Dortmund and Fluminense from Brazil played out a 0-0 draw at the Club World Cup. Inter Milan and the Mexicans from Monterrey drew 1-1. Tonight’s matches see Real Madrid playing against Al-Hilal and Manchester City against Wydad Casablanca.
CYCLING – The Tour of Belgium kicks off today. The first stage is over 198 kilometres. Luxembourgish cyclists Arthur Kluckers and Alex Kirsch are taking part.
ICE HOCKEY – The Florida Panthers have captured their second consecutive Stanley Cup, defeating Edmonton 5-1 to win the NHL Final.
Today promises another full day of sunshine, with a light cloud cover drifting through Luxembourg skies. Morning temperatures will start off mild, ranging between 15 and 17°C, before climbing to a scorching 30°C in the afternoon. A light breeze of 10–20 km/h will offer a touch of relief, but the overall feel remains dry and sun-filled.
