Boris Johnson said, on Friday, he wanted this to be “the start of a new era of friendly cooperation” between Britain and the EU. But less than 72 hours into our new existence as an “independent” state, since then, and only 72-hours into the ‘departure process’, Johnson has become more hard line.
According to reports via The Guardian: Johnson says the UK will not commit to remaining aligned to EU standards - even though it intends voluntarily to maintain high standards.
He says that the UK wants a Canada-style free trade agreement with the EU, but that it is willing to manage without one.
The EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier will hold a press conference to outline the EU’s position. Shortly after, Johnson will deliver the UK’s take.
