
She passed away peacefully at her home in London on Thursday evening, according to her husband. She had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014.
Her career spanned nearly seven decades across theatre, TV and film. She rose to fame in the Carry On films in the 1960es and later became a household name in Britain as landlady Peggy Mitchell in Eastenders.
She has won several awards, including a Tony in 1965 for her role in Oh, What a Lovely War! and two wins at the British Soap Awards. She was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2016.
