Luxembourg 

ECONOMIC FUTURE – The Director of the Chamber of Commerce, Carlo Thelen, has warned that Luxembourg's social systems and economic competitiveness are under threat from stagnating growth, an ageing workforce, and over-regulation, compounded by geopolitical challenges and internal structural problems.

WAGE DISPARITY – A new French statistical report shows cross-border workers from France's Grand Est region earn an average of 65% more in Luxembourg than locally, and for those in health and social care the pay difference can be up to 103%.

MOTORIST DEATH – Police confirm a 39-year-old driver has died from injuries sustained when his car crashed into the back of a lorry on the A3 near Dudelange early on Saturday morning, becoming wedged under the trailer.

AMAZON PROTEST – A coalition of NGOs and left-wing parties will demonstrate against Amazon in Luxembourg City on Friday, following the company's announcement of 10% workforce cuts. The 'Make Amazon Pay' movement criticises Amazon for data protection violations, tax practices, and environmental impact. Organisers are also targeting Prime Minister Luc Frieden for what they call a "naive submission to American tech".

ELECTRICITY PRICE – Enovos has announced electricity price cuts starting January 2026, with rates dropping by an average of 2.5 cents per kilowatt-hour. The energy provider cites a stabilising market and aims to make sustainable energy more accessible for customers.

World

BELGIUM STRIKES Belgium's general strike enters its third day with widespread disruption. The national strike is set to halt all departing flights from both Brussels airports, with many arrivals also cancelled or disrupted. The walkout, led by transport unions across Belgium, is expected to cause major disruption to air travel and public transport nationwide.  

UKRAINE WAR – Efforts toward a Ukraine peace deal continue as US President Trump despatches envoy Steve Witkoff to Moscow to negotiate a possible compromise. The Coalition of the Willing, the 35 Western nations supporting Ukraine, stressed yesterday that no agreement will be reached without approval from Ukraine, NATO, and Europe. Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says Russia has made little progress this year, with 20,000 Russian soldiers killed or wounded monthly. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will address the European Parliament on Ukraine today.

AUCHAN RESTRUCTURING – Struggling French retailer Auchan plans to rebrand all 300 supermarkets as Intermarché and Netto franchises by late 2026. The move follows a restructuring involving 2,400 job cuts. It is not clear how Auchan stores in Luxembourg will be affected.

UK BUDGET – British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves delivers the government’s annual budget to the House of Commons later this morning. The announcement comes amid weaker-than-expected economic data showing low growth and unemployment rising to 5%, adding pressure on the Labour government to revive the economy.

Sport

FOOTBALL – In Champions League action, Chelsea thrashed 10-man Barcelona 3-0 at Stamford Bridge, while Manchester City suffered their first defeat of the campaign, losing 2-0 at home to Bayer Leverkusen. In other games Borussia Dortmund beat Villareal 4-0 and  Marseille beat Newcastle 2-1.

Among tonight's highlights PSG are playing Tottenham and Arsenal take on Bayern.

WINTER OLYMPICS – The Olympic torch for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter games will be lit in the Archaeological Museum in Olympia, Greece, today, after organisers were forced into changes as a result of rainy weather. The games will take place from 6–12 February, in Italy for the third time.
