In Germany last year, insurers paid over €1.1 billion for damage caused by motorists hitting animals.

Germany's insurance industry association (GDV) said around 276,000 accidents had been recorded in 2024, or roughly 750 a day.

The average cost to repair damage after an accident involving a deer or wild boar came to around €4,100, due to expensive car parts, or high mechanic prices. Most insurers will cover accidents if the damage is caused by the animal.

The risk of hitting an animal on the road is increased in the autumn and winter months, as the days are shorter and visibility is thus impaired somewhat. Motorists are advised to drive slowly through forests and along country roads to allow for better reaction times if an animal jumps in front of the car.

The Grand Ducal police have a list of tips to reduce the risk of colliding with a wild animal on their website.
