Not only in Luxembourg's neighbouring country, Germany, but worldwide, the number of people reaching at least 100 years of age is increasing.
At the end of 2024, Germany counted 17,900 centenarians, according to the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden. This represents an increase of 24 percent compared to 2011. Among those aged 100 and over, women accounted for 83.8 percent, down slightly from 87 percent in 2011.
In relation to the total population, the highest concentration of centenarians is found in and around Hamburg, with 2.9 per 10,000 inhabitants recorded last year. Next come the federal states of Saxony and Saarland. The lowest figures were registered in Bavaria and Bremen.
The number of people aged 100 or more has also risen worldwide. In 2011, there were 0.4 centenarians per 10,000 people; today that figure stands at 0.7. The largest populations of centenarians are found in Japan (121,000), the United States (70,000), and China (43,000).
