Luxembourg
HEAT ALERTS – Meteolux has issued a yellow warning for high temperatures across Luxembourg today, valid from 1pm–8pm. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach 30°C to 32°C nationwide, with up to 33°C possible in urban areas and along the Moselle. On Tuesday, the alert level rises to orange, in effect from 12pm to 9pm, with forecasts indicating temperatures between 33°C and 35°C across the country.
UNION PROTEST – Following a large protest by trade unions OGBL and LCGB on Saturday afternoon, Prime Minister Luc Frieden has appeared live on RTL television, to address the concerns raised by the thousands who had gathered in protest. Frieden, a central focus of the demonstration, said he had followed the event with great seriousness and described it as a "successful protest". Responding to the sight of over ten thousand citizens marching against his government's policy, he acknowledged that major reforms inevitably trigger opposition but said the government is open for further discussions on issues such as pension reform.
GARE PROTEST – On a smaller scale, 22 residents of Luxembourg City's Gare neighbourhood took part in a neighbourhood walk yesterday evening, accompanied by a police presence, in an effort to highlight ongoing local concerns.The initiative aims to promote peaceful civic engagement, shared responsibility, and a sense of community solidarity.
AGRICULTURE FAIR – The 42nd edition of Luxembourg's Agricultural Fair – the country's largest farming event – will take place in Ettelbruck from 4 to 6 July. Last year's event drew 50,000 visitors, and similar crowds are expected this year. The fair will feature 330+ exhibitors.
World
UN POVERTY – A UN conference aiming to rally fresh support for development aid begins in Spain today, with the sector in crisis as US-led funding cuts jeopardise the fight against poverty. At least 50 world leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, Kenya's William Ruto, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, and UN head Antonio Guterres will gather in Seville, but key player the United States is snubbing the biggest such talks in a decade.
AUSTRALIA MURDER – An Australian jury has begun deliberating the fate of Erin Patterson, accused of murdering three relatives and attempting to kill a fourth with a mushroom-laced beef Wellington. The high-profile trial is weighing claims of a deliberate poisoning against her defence of a tragic accident.
SEAN 'DIDDY' COMBS TRIAL – Jurors will today begin deliberating whether Sean "Diddy" Combs parlayed his celebrity, wealth, and business empire into a decades-long criminal ring that saw him force women into drug-fueled sexual performances with escorts. Combs faces upwards of life in prison if convicted on five federal charges that include racketeering, sex trafficking, and transportation for purposes of prostitution. He denies the charges.
EUROPE HEATWAVE – Southern Europe is sweltering under its first major heatwave of the summer, with temperatures pushing past 40°C. In Italy, 17 cities – from Milan in the north to Palermo in the south – are on red alert for high temperatures, with peaks recorded of 39°C. In France, as temperatures in the southern port city of Marseille flirted with 40°C, the city's authorities have ordered public swimming pools be free of charge to help residents beat the heat. Fires have broken out in France and Turkey, with other countries already on alert.
Sport
TENNIS – It’s the start of the annual Wimbledon tennis tournament today. Today, Carlos Alcaraz, who won the men’s title for the last two years will open play on centre court. He will take on Italy’s Fabio Fagnini. The women’s number 1, Aryna Sabalenka, will face Canada’s Carson Branstine. Luxembourg’s Chris Rodesch, qualifying for the tournament for the first time, is playing Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta this afternoon.
FOOTBALL – Bayern Munich have booked their place in the Club World Cup quarter-finals with a 4-2 victory over Flamengo, while PSG beat Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami 4-0 to also reach the quarter-finals.
FORMULA 1 – Lando Norris resisted attacks from team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri to claim a masterful McLaren 1-2 in Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix. It was Norris's first win in Austria, his third win this year, and the seventh of his career.
TABLE FOOTBALL – Luxembourg has come in second place and won silver in the world championships in table football after the US team beat them in four games in the final yesterday.
Weather
It's sunny and going to get very hot today, and it’s the start of a very hot week across Europe and also here in Luxembourg. Morning temperatures of 22°C are expected to reach the 33°C range by the afternoon.
