A 90-kilogram catfish attacked swimmers at a Bavarian lake on Saturday, injuring five people before being shot by police.
An aggressive fish more than two meters long injured five people on Saturday at a lake in the Bavarian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen.
Police eventually shot the giant catfish, which weighed around 90 kilograms. It had been lingering near a swimming platform for some time and repeatedly attacked people in the water.
The culprit – a wels catfish – is the largest freshwater fish in Europe and has a reputation for dramatic encounters, particularly in Germany. In 2003, a similar case made headlines in Mönchengladbach, where a catfish nicknamed “Kuno the Killer Catfish” was alleged to have swallowed a young dachshund.
