US ELECTIONS - Luxembourg's Prime Minister Luc Frieden has reacted to the election victory of Donald Trump by emphasising Luxembourg's strong relationship with the US and the importance of mutual respect in transatlantic relations.
He also took to X to send his congratulations:
Former Luxembourg Prime Minister and former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker commented on the comeback of US President-elect Donald Trump, stating that Europe is unlikely to be a top priority for the incoming administration. In an interview with our colleagues from RTL Radio, Juncker emphasised that while the choice of US voters must be respected, the outcome diverges from what many Europeans had hoped for.
CASA CASHFLOW - The Casa home furnishings chain, which has six locations in Luxembourg is facing significant economic difficulties and has sought court protection in Belgium due to cash flow problems that threaten its continued operation. The chain is grappling with intense competition from industry giants like Ikea and the rise of e-commerce, all within a broader struggling market.
STATEC INFLATION - Luxembourg's inflation rate dropped to 1% in October, marking its lowest level in over three and a half years, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC). This decrease brings the annual inflation rate down to 2.1%. Looking ahead, STATEC anticipates a slight inflation increase next year, driven in part by the end of current energy price caps.
World
GERMANY GOVERNMENT - Germany’s three-party coalition has collapsed after ministers from the Free Democrats quit the government. It came after the Chancellor Olaf Scholz sacked his finance minister. He said Christian Lindner, who leads the Free Democrats had broken his trust too often, making government work impossible.
US ELECTIONS - Kamala Harris says she will ensure a peaceful handover of power to the new Trump administration. But in a speech to her supporters in Washington DC, she said that while she conceded the election, she would not concede the fight that fuelled the campaign. Earlier in the day Harris and Joe Biden congratulated Donald Trump on his decisive victory.
Chinese President Xi Jinping said earlier today that Beijing and Washington must find a way to "get along" in a message to US president-elect Donald Trump. Trump's victory ushers in a new era of uncertainty and heralds a possible shift in US-China relations, frayed in recent years by tensions over everything from trade to the status of self-ruled Taiwan.
CUBA HURRICANE - A powerful Category 3 hurricane has made landfall in western Cuba. At least 70,000 people have been evacuated from their homes. Authorities said the state-owned electricity company has been forced to shut down the national grid. It’s the second hurricane to hit Cuba in a month and its second blackout to affect the island’s 10 million inhabitants.
EPC MEETING - The 5th meeting of the European Political Community in Budapest today will bring together 47 heads of state and government to discuss Europe’s security challenges, including Russia’s war on Ukraine and the ongoing escalation in the Middle East, migration and the American election. It is possible that a live session with Donald Trump will be included.
AUSTRALIA SOCIAL MEDIA BAN - The Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has said his government will introduce new laws banning children under 16 from social media. He said the pervasive influence of platforms like Facebook and TikTok was "doing real harm to our kids".

FOOTBALL - In the Champion’s League games last night, Arsenal suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Inter Milan. Aston Villa also lost 1-0 in their match against the Belgian side Club Bruges. In other matches, Bayern beat Benfica 1-0, PSG lost 2-1 to Atletico and Bergamo won 2-0 against Stuttgart.
RUGBY - Ireland meet New Zealand tomorrow in a rematch of last year's epic Rugby World Cup quarter-final which dashed Irish dreams of lifting the trophy. The All Blacks finished second in the Rugby Championship, but come in to the game on the back of a victory over England last Saturday.
BASKETBALL - Stephen Curry out-dueled USA team-mate Jayson Tatum in a Golden State Warriors win over the Boston Celtics yesterday. The Warriors improved to 7-1 after a thrilling 118-112 victory at the TD Garden. In other games, the Denver Nuggets ended Oklahoma City's unbeaten start to the season with a 124-122 win. The Cleveland Cavaliers continued their unbeaten start to the campaign with a 131-122 win over the New Orleans Pelicans. In Memphis, LeBron James scored 39 points but could not stop the Los Angeles Lakers from falling to a 131-114 blowout defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies improved to 5-4 while the Lakers are now 4-4.
Weather
Yet another misty morning awaits us. Predictions point to the fog lifting in the early afternoon, to be replaced by an influx of big clouds. The fog is expected to return at night, anyway. Temperature-wise, it's similar to yesterday: 4-6°C in the morning, going up to 8-10°C as the maximum temperature.
