Prime Minister Luc Frieden emphasised Luxembourg's strong relationship with the US and the importance of mutual respect in transatlantic relations following Donald Trump's election victory.

In a brief press statement, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Luc Frieden reacted to the election victory of Donald Trump in the United States by emphasising the importance of transatlantic relations.

Frieden remarked that US voters, through "free and democratic elections," had chosen Donald Trump as the next President of the United States. He underscored that in a democracy, this outcome must be respected both by the people of the United States and the rest of the world, including Europe.

While some may have hoped for or expected a different result due to differing political preferences, Frieden acknowledged that the election was a clear victory for Trump. He went on to congratulate the "future President of the United States, President Trump," on behalf of the Luxembourg government.

The Prime Minister highlighted the significance of the US for Luxembourg, noting that the country's relationship with the US is particularly important. "We are deeply connected by our shared history, especially from the First and Second World Wars," he said. "We all know what we owe to the US for freeing us from Nazi Germany."

Frieden also emphasised the critical role the US plays in both economic and security matters. "Economically, the US is our most important trading partner outside the European Union," he stated.

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister invited President-elect Trump "not to forget" Europe, stressing that "the US needs Europe, and Europe needs the US" to address key global challenges, from climate change and democratic values to security and artificial intelligence.

Finally, Frieden stressed that Luxembourg's government would continue to engage with the US in a spirit of mutual respect, while remaining committed to its core values and principles. "We will stand up for these values in a respectful and constructive dialogue with President Trump," he affirmed.
