Luxembourg

EU MEETINGS - EU foreign ministers are meeting in Luxembourg today. Ministers are expected to impose sanction on Iran for supplying ballistic missiles to Russia which are now being used in the war against Ukraine. The UK's foreign minister David Lammy will join European ministers for the first time in two years, as the new government looks to "reset" relations with the continent.

Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel will also meet his counterparts from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein in a meeting of the German-speaking foreign ministers.

EU environment ministers are also meeting in Kirchberg today. They are expected to approve a common European position for the World Climate Conference in Azerbaijan next month. One point of contention is the role of nuclear energy. Luxembourg is represented by Environment Minister Serge Wilmes.

REMEMBRANCE DAY - On Sunday, Luxembourg paid tribute to the resistance movement from World War II, the forcibly recruited and the victims of the Holocaust as part of the National Day of Remembrance. Click here for photos of the commemoration events.

MISSING PERSON - Police have issued a missing person alert for 15-year-old Franck Mario Roger Couvreux, who was last seen in Linger at 8am on 11 October. Couvreux, who was born in France, is about 165cm tall, of slim stature, and has brown hair. People with information on the teenager’s whereabouts should contact the Capellen/Steinfort police department over phone (+352 244 30 1000) or email (police.capellensteinfort@police.etat.lu).

World

MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT - The Israeli military says a drone strike on one of its bases has killed four soldiers. It says another seven were severely wounded in the attack by Hezbollah. The Iranian-backed group said it targeted the site in Binyamina, near Haifa, in retaliation for the deadly Israeli strikes in Lebanon. 
The head of the United Nations has said that any attacks on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon may constitute a war crime. Yesterday UNIFIL said Israeli tanks broke through the main gate of a base, firing smoke grenades. Israel have said one of its tanks was trying to evacuate the injured soldiers.

US ARREST - Police in California have arrested a man carrying illegal guns outside a Donald Trump rally. He was released on bail, after being detained at a check point before the presidential candidate had arrived. Trump has been subject to two assassination attempts in recent months.

NATO EXERCISE - NATO will hold a long-planned major nuclear exercise starting today. The “Steadfast Noon” exercise will be led by Belgium and the Netherlands, use eight military bases and involve 2,000 personnel and 60 aircrafts from 13 nations. Bomber aircraft and fighter jets that can carry nuclear warheads are taking part.

NOBEL PRIZE - Closing the season, the Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce the Nobel economics prize this morning, with specialists on credit, the role of government, and wealth inequality seen as possible contenders. The winner of the prestigious prize, which last year went to American economist Claudia Goldin, will be announced at 11:45 am.

STASI MURDER TRIAL - A former East German secret police officer faces a verdict in a murder trial today, accused of shooting dead a Polish man trying to flee to the West 50 years ago. If ex-Stasi officer Martin Naumann is found guilty, it would be the first conviction of its kind, almost 35 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Naumann is accused of killing Czeslaw Kukuczka by shooting him in the back at close range as Kukuczka sought to flee through Berlin's Friedrichstrasse border point in 1974.

Sport

FOOTBALL - Starting with the Football Nations League, England beat Finland 3-1 and Austria thrashed Norway 5-1.
The Luxembourgish national team failed to put an end to their long goalless streak in Plovdiv on Saturday evening while playing against Bulgaria. The 0-0 scoreline means the Red Lions are still bottom of their group after three games.

Today’s matches include Belgium against France and Germany are playing the Netherlands.

WORLD RECORD - There is a new world record after Ruth Chepngetich of Kenya obliterated the women's world record by almost two minutes after she won the Chicago Marathon in 2:09:56.

TENNISNovak Djokovic has insisted that he plans "to compete and play next season" despite suffering another loss at the hands of world number one Jannik Sinner. The 37-year-old Serb, the holder of a men's record 24 Grand Slam titles, went down 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 to the Italian in the final of the Shanghai Masters.

What will start off as a cloudy day will get even cloudier. Some on-and-off rain showers are expected and there is a possibility of a little sun mid-morning. By the evening, those clouds will turn into fog and drizzle. The day also starts off colder at 4-7°C, and it rises to 14-17°C in the afternoon.
