ECJ RULINGS - The EU's top court has delivered two major victories in the bloc's battle to rein in tech giants by ruling against Apple and Google in separate legal sagas with billions of euros at stake. Putting an end to a long-running legal battle, the European Court of Justice in Kirchberg ruled that the iPhone maker must pay 13 billion euros in back-taxes to Ireland. Minutes later, the court also upheld a 2.4-billion-euro fine against Google.

BOWEL CANCER - Luxembourg's Ministry of Health has reduced the bowel cancer screening age to 45 from 55 in the wake of rising cases amongst younger people.Bowel cancer is one of the three most common cancers, and also one of the deadliest, affecting more and more younger people each year. However, early detection can increase the chances of survival and recovery.

FINDEL AIRPORT - The Luxembourg airport CEO has told RTL that Findel is among the “least stressful” airports in Europe. According to Alexander Flassak, Findel handled over 5 million passengers last year for the first time. Despite recent disruptions, including a malfunctioning metal detector and a runway issue, he emphasised that 95% of passengers are through security in uder 15 minutes.

SCHUEBERFOUER END - The Schueberfouer comes to a close today, concluding with a fireworks display at 10pm. Reflecting on a successful edition of the fair, Charel Hary, president of the Fairground and Stall Operators Association highlighted the significant number of visitors this year and their positive feedback. Hary also pointed out that the event passed without any major incidents, a fact the association is "proud" of. According to organisers, two million visitors came to the Schueberfouer.

World

US ELECTION DEBATE - The US Presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump have clashed over immigration, abortion and the economy in their first televised debate of the campaign. Vice-president Harris called the former President a laughing stock on the world stage and said he would be manipulated by dictators if he returned to the White House. Donald Trump criticised American military aid to Ukraine, as well as accusing Kamala Harris of having no economic plans.

Taylor Swift has endorsed Kamala Harris for president, in a post on Instagram published minutes after the debate, saying the Democratic candidate would be the “warrior” to fight for the rights and causes she believes in. In her statement, Swift encouraged her fans to register to vote.

UKRAINE WAR - In a rare joint trip, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy are in Ukraine today to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky is asking for weapons with more firepower and fewer restrictions. Meanwhile, the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany have announced new sanctions against Iran. Tehran has allegedly supplied Moscow with ballistic missiles for the Ukraine war.

VIETNAM TYPHOON - The death toll in Vietnam from Typhoon Yagi has risen to 141, the government said earlier today. Over 700 people were injured and at least 50 are still missing. The storm caused massive flooding and mud avalanches at the weekend.

LA FIRES - Out-of-control wildfires surrounding Los Angeles are continuing to grow, forcing families to evacuate and blanketing the sky with choking smoke. Thousands of firefighters, with support from the US National Guard, are battling to slow the spread of fires tearing through tinder-dry brush.There have been no reports of deaths or serious injuries, but tens of thousands of homes and businesses are being threatened by the looming flames.
PLAYSTATION LAUNCH  - Sony says it will launch an upgraded version of its flagship games console with better graphics and AI capabilities on November 7, calling it PlayStation 5 Pro.The Japanese firm's gaming division has endured tough times this year, with PlayStation 5 missing its sales targets and PlayStation announcing 900 job cuts in February.

Sport

FOOTBALL - Yesterday was the conclusion of the second group game day in the Football Nations League. The Netherlands and Germany drew 2-2. And England beat Finland 2-0. Now there is a break until mid-October.

In other football news, Mauricio Pochettino has been named as the new head coach of the United States national team. The former Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Espanyol coach replaces American Gregg Berhalter who was fired in July after a disappointing Copa America campaign.

French judges have ordered six men to stand trial in a kidnap and extortion case involving French footballer Paul Pogba, with the star's brother Mathias one of the accused. The trial follows a two-year investigation into the alleged extortion and kidnapping of the former Manchester United midfielder in a high-profile case that emerged in 2022.

HOCKEY - Australian hockey player Tom Craig has been banned for 12 months following his arrest during the Paris Olympics last month on suspicion of buying cocaine. A statement from Hockey Australia said Craig will serve at least half of the ban, with the remaining six months to be suspended if the player meets conduct requirements.
