ECJ RULINGS - The European Court of Justice here in Luxembourg is ruling in a 13-billion-euro tax case this morning, involving Apple and Ireland, and could also deliver a victory for Brussels by upholding a multi-billion-euro fine against Google, in two eagerly awaited decisions.The rulings are expected to be published after 09:30 our time.

FATAL ACCIDENT - Police are reporting a fatal accident in Bettembourg yesterday evening. According to the police report, two cars collided at a cross roads. A 31-year-old man died in the accident and another person was injured. An investigation is in place.

LIBERATION ANNIVERSARY - 80 years ago today, Luxembourg City was liberated from the Nazis. To mark the anniversary, the City is hosting a commemorative ceremony in the presence of the Grand Ducal couple, high ranking politicians as well as descendants of General Oliver, who commanded the US Army’s advance into Luxembourg City. In addition to the ceremony, there will be a parade with historic military vehicles, a concert and a symposium at the Cercle Municipal.

World

GERMANY BORDERS - Germany is once again tightening border controls. From Monday onwards, temporary controls will be extended to Germany’s land borders for 6 months with all nine of its neighbours. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser made the announcement yesterday, saying the increased controls would limit migration and "protect against the dangers posed by Islamist terrorism and serious crime. Luxembourg's Minister for Home Affairs, Léon Gloden was optimistic in an interview with RTL that cross-border traffic will not be affected.

GAZA WAR - Gaza’s civil defence agency says 40 people have been killed and more than 60 injured in Israeli airstrikes on a designated humanitarian zone in southern Gaza. Many more are reported to be buried. The Israeli army says it had targeted a Hamas command centre in the area.

US ELECTION - Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are making their final preparations ahead of tonight’s first -- and possibly only -- televised debate before the US presidential election. With less than two months until election day, the face-off could be a turning point in a bitter contest between the Democratic vice president and Republican former president.

KATE CANCER - Catherine, Princess of Wales has announced that she has completed her course of chemotherapy following a shock cancer diagnosis earlier this year. Kensington Palace released a 'highly personal' video yesterday, in which the future queen describes how "life as you know it can change in an instant". The princess said the last nine months had been "incredibly tough" for the whole family.

JAMES EARL JONES DIES - Hollywood is mourning James Earl Jones. The American actor died at the age of 93.
In addition to his roles in films, he was also the voice of Darth Vader in Star Wars and of Mufasa in The Lion King.

Sport

FOOTBALL -Tonight are the last matches of the second matchday in the Nations League. Among the highlights are the game between the Netherlands and Germany and England vs Finland. It will be Harry Kane’s 100th cap. The 31-year-old will receive a commemorative gold cap to mark the occasion, while he plans to wear a special pair of gold boots during the game.
Yesterday evening, France beat Belgium 2-0 and Italy won against Israel 2-1.

RUGBY - South African 2019 World Cup winner Sibusiso Nkosi has been banned for three years by World Rugby after testing positive for an anabolic steroid. Meanwhile, South Africa captain Siya Kolisi has rejoined the Sharks after prematurely ending his contract with the French club Racing 92. He made only 18 appearances for Racing due to injuries in the first season of a planned three-year contract and his family reportedly struggled to settle in Paris.

Weather

It’s taken a rather moody, autumnal turn with a grey start to the day, followed by cloudy conditions until the evening, when we might just have some rain showers. In the morning, temperatures start off at 11-13°C, rising to highs of around 15-17°C by the afternoon.
