Luxembourg 

DEADLY ACCIDENT - Shortly before 3am on Sunday, a 27-year-old man was killed in a devastating car accident in Putscheid. According to the police, the incident occurred as the man was walking towards a parking lot. For reasons yet to be determined, he fell and was subsequently struck by a vehicle. The unfortunate incident resulted in his immediate death at the scene. The police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

ANTIBIOTICS PLAN - The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture have joined forces to collaborate on a National Antibiotics Plan, aimed at reducing the prescription of antibiotics. Antibiotics are intended for use only in cases of bacterial infections, yet this guideline is not always adhered to.

LUXEMBOURG OLYMPIC TEAM - In a memorable twist at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony, the Luxembourg delegation inadvertently became the talk of the event when they faced the wrong direction during their procession along the Seine, a blunder they attribute to incorrect instructions from the organisers. When the Luxembourg delegation rode by the film cameras around 9pm, audiences at home only got a view of their backs. Unsurprisingly, the clip has quickly made the rounds on social media and people followed up just as quickly with various memes at the expense of the Luxembourg team.

World

ISRAEL ATTACKWestern powers, including the US have urged Israel and Hezbollah to show restraint after 12 children and teenagers were killed by a rocket, which struck an Arab town in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Israel said Hezbollah would pay a heavy price for the deaths but the Iran-backed militant group says it was not behind Saturday’s attack.

FRANCE HEAT - In France, authorities have issued a warning for high temperatures expected to affect 13 regions in France. Temperatures are expected to reach up to 40 degrees in the south and along the Atlantic coast. The heat will then continue to the north of the country tomorrow and on Wednesday in our direction. The impact of these conditions on the Olympic Games in Paris is a concern.

FRANCE TRAINS - Train operations will resume as normal from today. SNCF has announced that TGV routes will all operate according to schedule. The repair work after Friday's sabotage actions has been completed. So far, it is still not known who was behind the attacks.

CANADA / US WILDFIRES - Rain and cooler temperatures have helped firefighters battling a huge forest fire that devastated part of the popular tourist town of Jasper in western Canada. The fire has so far caused no casualties, although as many as 25,000 residents and tourists were forced to evacuate.

Meanwhile, a huge, fast-moving and rapidly growing wildfire in northern California has forced more than 4,000 people to evacuate as firefighters battle gusty winds and perilously dry conditions. Fuelled by a heatwave, the so-called Park Fire has grown by 20 sq km an hour.

Sport

OLYMPICS 2024 – Starting with table tennis at the Olympics - Ni Xia Lian has emerged as the only Luxembourg player to advance to the second round, out of the three players that qualified for the Paris Olympics. The 61-year-old Luxembourger won 4-2 against Sibel Altinkaya from Turkey. She will face the number 1 in the world, the Chinese player Sun Yingsha tomorrow at the earliest. The exact timing will be released today.

In tennis, Rafael Nadal will face Novak Djokovic, following a win against 83rd-ranked Marton Fucsovics yesterday. Because the schedule is a little behind, it is not yet known when the two medal favorites will meet. They will play each other for the 60th time.

On the basketball court, NBA superstars from the US including LeBron James, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant launched the defence of their Olympic crown with a 110-84 win over Serbia.

Olympic organisers have cancelled a second day of triathlon training in the River Seine planned today after weekend downpours in Paris polluted the waterway, but said they were "confident" the medal events would be held this week.

There were a lot of medal decisions yesterday. In swimming, there was gold for France’s Léon Marchand in the 400 meter medley swim while Italy’s Nicolo Martinenghi won gold in the 100m breaststroke. In fencing, Japan's Koki Kano secured gold. Japan is also currently leading the medal table, with 4 gold, two silver and one bronze. The USA has won 12 medals so far, but only 3 gold.

FORMULA 1 - Lewis Hamilton emerged as the winner of a dramatic Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday after Mercedes teammate George Russell, who took the chequered flag, was disqualified when his car was found to be underweight following the race. It is the second win of the season for the seven-time world champion following his success at Silverstone earlier this month and the 105th of his Formula One career.

Summer is back with blue skies, nice temperatures and no rain on the horizon. The day will start with temperatures around 16°C and warm to a lovely 26-28°C in the afternoon.
