FATAL ACCIDENT - A fatal accident occurred shortly before 4pm yesterday on the A31 motorway, heading from Luxembourg City towards Metz. The incident involved a collision between a motorbike and a car, resulting in the death of a 58-year-old male motorcyclist.
PROPERTY PRICES - The Housing Observatory has published a report analysing the property market in the first quarter of 2024, confirming that house prices are still lower compared to last year. While recent headlines have focused on a significant drop in new-build flat activity, prices have stabilised on the existing property market. This stabilisation is attributed to increased market activity, evident from the property sales recorded in the first quarter of 2024.
PETROL PRICES - The price of SP95 petrol rose by 1.8 cents overnight, reaching €1.60 per litre.Similarly, SP98 petrol saw a rise of 2.1 cents per litre, bringing the price to €1.716 as of Friday morning as well. With this latest increase, SP98 has become the most expensive fuel at petrol stations, while diesel prices remain unchanged at €1.525 per litre.
AGRICULTURAL FAIR - And it’s the Foire Agricole, Luxembourg’s agricultural fair this weekend. Opening this afternoon with the motto “proud of our region”, the fair is featuring 350 exhibitors this year, as well as plenty of equestrian shows & local cattle breeds.

UK ELECTION – Keir Starmer is set to be the UK's next Prime Minister, as his centre-left opposition Labour party swept to a landslide general election victory, ending 14 years of right-wing Conservative rule."The Labour Party has won this general election, and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory," a sombre-looking Rishi Sunak said after he was re-elected to his seat."Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides," the Tory leader added, calling the results "sobering" and saying he took responsibility for the defeat. At a triumphant party rally in central London, Starmer told cheering activists that "change begins here" and promised a "decade of national renewal", putting "country first, party second".
IRAN ELECTIONS - Iran is holding a presidential election runoff today between reformist Masoud Pezeshkian and ultraconservative Saeed Jalili following a record-low turnout in the first round. In last week's first round, Pezeshkian received the most votes, but no one achieved an absolute majority. Only 40 percent of Iran's 61 million eligible voters turned up at the polls -- the lowest turnout in any presidential election since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
FRANCE ELECTIONS - The French far right and its struggling rivals are making a final push for votes today, ahead of the decisive round of parliamentary elections that were called by President Macron. The National Rally (RN) insists it can win an absolute majority in parliament, despite polls projecting the anti-immigration and eurosceptic outfit will fall short of seats despite being the largest party. Today is the last day of legal campaigning, which by law must wind down at midnight (2200 GMT) ahead of a day of calm before polls open in mainland France at 8:00 am (0600 GMT) on Sunday.

FOOTBALL - Hosts Germany face Spain in a thrilling Euro 2024 quarter-final clash in Stuttgart tonight, followed by France versus Portugal in Hamburg, promising a day of high-stakes football as Kylian Mbappe and Cristiano Ronaldo prepare to lead their teams. Tomorrow, England will play Switzerland and the Netherlands against Turkey.
CYCLING - Dutch sprinter Dylan Groenewegen won stage six of the Tour de France yesterday after an eye-catching run though Burgundy ended in a mass dash for the finish line in Dijon.Overnight leader Tadej Pogacar retains the yellow jersey by 45sec from Belgian Remco Evenepoel while defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is third. Today seventh stage is a 25km individual time-trial from Nuits-Saint-Georges to Gevrey Chambertin.
FORMULA 1 - It's the British Grand Prix at Silverstone this weekend. Max Verstappen welcomed the restoration of his friendship with Lando Norris yesterday, following their crash last Sunday. The Red Bull driver said he and Norris had spoken, following their controversial collision in the Austrian Grand Prix, and had quickly agreed that they should continue to race each other hard in the same way.
TENNIS - Carlos Alcaraz must put his friendship with Frances Tiafoe to one side as the defending champion targets a place in the Wimbledon last 16 today. And US Open champion and world number two Coco Gauff takes on British qualifier Sonay Kartal, who has defied her humble ranking of 298 to reach the third round of a Slam for the first time.
