On Friday evening, the EU candidate for Saxony was attacked in Dresden while he was hanging up campaign posters for the SPD. A 17-year-old man has now turned himself in to the police.
He admitted to attacking the politician. In total, however, there were 4 perpetrators who beat Matthias Ecke so severely that he was immediately taken to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery.
The brutality of this attack represents a new dimension of anti-democratic violence. This was the reaction of the German Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser.
The German Federal Minister of the Interior spoke yesterday of a brutality that would represent a new dimension of anti-democratic violence. According to various media reports, Nancy Faeser has now scheduled an extraordinary conference of interior ministers from all the federal states for next week. There, they will discuss protection measures.

This is not the first attack during this campaign season. Just last Thursday, a Green Party politician was attacked while walking in Essen. As Der Spiegel reports, since the beginning of the year, 112 politically motivated criminal offenses have been recorded in connection with the elections. Of these, 30 were against politicians holding an official mandate. And these are just numbers from Saxony, one of Germany’s 16 federal states.
