After 21 years of marriage, the couple, who separated in 2023, were mistakenly divorced due to a computer error, with a senior judge ruling that the decision cannot be overturned.

Due to a clerical error, a couple in the midst of finalising their financial arrangements were accidentally divorced when solicitors applied a final order intended for another couple, as reported by The Guardian.

The solicitors realised their error two days later and applied to rescind the final divorce order, attributing the mistake to someone "clicking the wrong button" and selecting the wrong name from the drop-down menu, according to Ayesha Vardag, head of the London law firm.

Despite this, a senior judge presiding over the case rejected the application to overturn the decision, arguing for the importance of respecting "the certainty and finality that flows from a final divorce."

However, Vardag disagrees with the judge's ruling, asserting that a mistake brought to court should be rectified to uphold justice.

The judge countered, emphasising that the final step of clicking "divorce" is preceded by several other steps and screens, implying that if it were truly a mistake, it should have been noticed earlier in the process.
