GERMANY STRIKE - A railway strike in Germany is expected to cause disruptions on CFL's Line 30 starting this morning until Friday at 6pm. According to Luxembourg’s railway company, the CFL no trains will traverse the German-Luxembourg border during the duration of the strike. Trains will run between Luxembourg City and Wasserbillig.

YOUTH PRISON - The current Minister of Justice, Elisabeth Margue has confirmed her commitment to a establish a prison specifically designed for minors. The initiative gained renewed attention following an incident a month ago when a minor had to be temporarily placed in the Schrassig adult prison due to limited space in the security unit (UniSec) in Dreiborn.

MISSING PERSON - Police are seeking information on the whereabouts of Franz Fritsch, who was last seen embarking on a bicycle trip on Monday afternoon. Police announced that the Tutange resident's bike was found in the Ansembourg area on Tuesday, which is now considered his last known location.

OVERSHOOT DAY - Luxembourg reached its 2024 'fruit overshoot day' yesterday, signaling the point at which the country has exhausted its yearly capacity for locally grown fruit production. The term overshoot day is used to label a moment when the planet, or in this case Luxembourg, has used up all the natural resources it can produce in a single year. Only about 2% of the fruit consumed in Luxembourg is locally grown, the rest is imported.

World

ECUADOR GUNMEN - Masked gunmen have broken into a live television studio in Ecuador and threatened terrified staff. The TV station was attacked a day after Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa declared a state of emergency, following the escape of one of the country’s most notorious drug bosses from prison. Live television images showed people wearing balaclavas – some waving guns – inside Ecuadors’s TC Television station in Guayaquil. Police say they later freed all the staff amd made 13 arrests.

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - It is the second day of Luxembourg Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel's visit to the Middle East. Today he is in Ramallah in West Jordan, for talks with Palestinian representatives. In addition to his meetings in Israel, Bettel also a visited a village that was destroyed during the Hamas attacks on October 7th and where dozens of people died.

Intensive diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip are continuing. The American Secretary of State Antony Blinken as well as German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock are in the region. And the Jordanian King Abdullah is meeting the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas and the Egyptian President El-Sisi in the course of the day.

FRANCE PM - French President Macron has picked Gabriel Attal as prime minister in a bid to give new momentum to his presidency. A wider cabinet reshuffle is expected this week with speculations that Gérald Darmanin will keep his post as Minister of the Interior, whereas the Minister of Finance Bruno LeMaire is rumoured to be out.

Sport

FOOTBALL - Chelsea missed a host of chances as Champion side Middlesbrough won the first leg of their League Cup semi-final 1-0. Chelsea have lost five of their last six away games and 21 times on the road since the beginning of last season -- the most of any Premier League team. The second match is on January 23.

Meanwhile, Timo Werner has returned to the Premier League after the German international joined Tottenham on loan for the rest of the season from RB Leipzig. The 27-year-old struggled to shine during a two-year spell at Chelsea between 2020 and 2022 but he did help the Blues lift the Champions League in 2021.

A yellow alert remains in effect until 10am for the whole of the country, as a precautionary measure against the cold, as Météolux warns that temperatures may dip as low as -6 or -7°C. A sunny morning greets the Grand Duchy today, expect dry and cold conditions, with a few high-altitude clouds. Morning temperatures range from -7° to -5°C.  Afternoon temperatures bring us just on the other side of freezing: in the north, expect -1 to 1°C, while the south will range from 0 to 2°C.
