Luxembourg reached its 2024 'fruit overshoot day' on January 9, signaling the point at which the country has exhausted its yearly capacity for locally grown fruit production, according to sectorial representatives.
The Luxembourg Association of Fruit Growers on Tuesday morning announced that the Grand Duchy reached its 2024 "fruit overshoot day" on 9 January. The term overshoot day is commonly used to label a moment when the planet, or in this case Luxembourg, has used up all the natural resources it can produce in a single year.
According to the association, only about 2% of the fruit consumed in Luxembourg is locally grown, the rest is imported.
The statement expresses hopes that the new government will strengthen the sector more significantly than the last administration did. Citing the coalition agreement, they believe that fruit farmers can look to the future with greater confidence.
