IS ARREST - German authorities have arrested a French woman in Trier for alleged war crimes committed in Syria as a member of the Islamic State. Samra N. is said to have travelled to Syria in September 2013 and encouraged individuals in Germany to follow in her footsteps.

TRIER ATTACK - It's three years ago today, that a car ploughed through the pedestrian area of Trier, killing five people including a nine-week-old baby girl. The victims will be remembered this afternoon, with a memorial plaque at the Porta Nigra, reminding people of what happened. The driver, a 51-year-old local man was sentenced to life imprisonment in a closed psychiatric facility in August last year.

AMPACET STRIKE - The conflict between unions and the management of Ampacet Luxembourg is escalating in Dudelange. Today is the 5th day of the strike at the American plastics company. Employees received encouragement yesterday, when about 300 union members came to support the strike.

CHEESE RECALL - The Tomme Savoie Fermière cheese, manufactured by Conus and sold in Match supermarkets between 20 October and 29 November, has been recalled over fears it could contain E. coli bacteria.

World

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR - The US Secretary of State has warned that Israel must do more to protect the civilian population in the south of Gaza, when it resumes its military campaign. Antony Blinken said there must be clearly designated areas out of the line of fire. Eight more Israeli hostages held in Gaza were freed by Hamas yesterday. In return Israel says it returned 30 Palestinians. It’s thought there are no more child hostages held by Hamas. Visit our live ticker for the latest updates.

COP28 - Britain’s King Charles will give the opening address at the UN Climate Summit of World Leaders in Dubai in a few hours’ time. He is expected to say he hopes COP28 will lead to genuine transformational action. A climate research organisation says countries that rely heavily on sales of oil and gas could lose trillions of dollars by 2040, as demand declines. Carbon Tracker says this could create conflict and instability.

SHANE MACGOWAN - Shane MacGowan, songwriter and lead singer of The Pogues, has died aged 65 after a long illness. MacGowan, who had been in and out of hospital in Dublin since July, is most famous for penning the Christmas classic "Fairytale of New York", a duet sung with Kirsty MacColl in 1987.

FOOTBALL - The women's national football team is playing away against Georgia in the Nations League today. Currently, Luxembourg is second in the table in Group C2, behind Turkey. On Sunday, the last group match will take place in Differdange against Lithuania.

EURO 2024 - Staying with football, the draw for Euro 2024 takes place in the port city of Hamburg on Saturday when France, England and the other leading contenders will learn the path to potential continental glory that awaits them next summer. The Elbe Philharmonic Hall, overlooking the river which runs through Germany's second-largest city, will be the venue for the draw, just over six months before the start of the tournament which runs from June 14 to July 14.

We might be in for another bit of snow today, but the few snow flakes that are forecast will fall during the morning hours, the rest of the day should be more or less dry, cold, and crisp. Day temperatures will range from -1 to 1°C. A drop to -3°C will then occur at night, making way for a chilly, wintry weekend.
