German authorities have arrested a French woman in Trier for alleged war crimes committed in Syria as a member of the Islamic State.

According to reports form the Associated Press, German authorities in Trier recently detained a French woman, identified only as Samra N. in accordance with German privacy regulations, on charges of committing war crimes in Syria as a member of the Islamic State extremist group.

Samra N. is said to have traveled to Syria in September 2013. The AP report suggests she initially joined Jabhat al-Nusra to marry a fighter of the group. In November 2013, both she and her husband allegedly switched allegiance to the Islamic State group.

While in Syria, Samra N. reportedly encouraged individuals in Germany to follow in her footsteps, eventually taking in a woman who had been influenced to leave her home for this purpose.

During her husband's absence on combat missions, she resided in women's houses that the Islamic State had seized, actions Germany classifies as "war crimes against property". Additionally, she managed her husband's household and assisted him in acquiring military equipment for the Islamic State.

Samra N. returned to Germany in early 2014, but reportedly remained associated with the Islamic State until at least February 2015. The circumstances behind her decision to go to Germany, despite being a French citizen, have not been made clear.
