Land borders don’t change much in western Europe these days, and that’s a good thing considering our shared history of wars and territorial land grabs.
Yet Germany has technically grown in size after the renovation of an old bridge over the Rhine in Bad Säckingen, Baden-Württemberg.
The wooden bridge is around 450 years old and forms part of the border between Germany and Switerland.
According to SWR, after the bridge was renovated the exact border point was moved. Whereas the border used to lie exactly halfway along the 204-metre bridge, Germany now extends eight metres further to the south.
