ESTONIA ELECTION - Prime Minister Kaja Kallas's centre-right Reform Party has won Estonia's general election by a wide margin, a result that should ensure Tallinn remains one of Europe’s most staunchly pro-Kyiv governments. Kallas said the election left her party in a strong position to form a coalition government that would keep up calling for pressure on Russia.

UKRAINE BAKHMUT - The battle for Bakhmut continues to be intense. According to the city’s deputy mayor Oleksandr Marchenko, Russian and Ukrainian forces are fighting in the streets of the city and he said “not a single building” remained untouched. He also said the remaining 4000 civilians are living in shelters without access to gas, electricity or water.

FRANCE STRIKES - French trade unions are planning a massive general strike across the country tomorrow in protest of President Macron’s plans to raise the official retirement age from 62 to 64. More than 260 demonstrations are expected nationwide, with strikes affecting transport, the energy sector and public services. Police expect between 1.1-1.4 million people to hit the streets, which would represent the biggest day of protests in decades.

TOBLERONE MATTERHORN - Toblerone has to remove the Matterhorn mountain peak from its packaging when some of the chocolate's production is moved from Switzerland to Slovakia. The pyramid-shaped bar, which mirrors the Alpine peak, will undergo a labelling revamp and use a more generic Alpine summit to replace it. Strict rules have applied about "Swissness" since 2017.

Luxembourg

ESCH CARNIVAL - Thousands of people flocked to Esch-sur-Alzette yesterday for the 22nd Cavalcade, a carnival parade that is part of the city’s annual Escher Fuesent. The parade started at 2.15pm and featured about 60 groups and 1,200 participants in colourful costumes and floats. Organisers say around 25,000 spectators lined the streets and joined the festivities.

TELEVIE CHARITY DINNER - Luxembourg is gearing up for its annual countrywide fundraiser to collect money for cancer research. Televie, which supports various foundations and projects fighting cancer, will include a celebrity fundraising dinner at the castle in Differdange on 25 March. The dinner will be served by local notables, including Minister for health Paulette Lenert, businesswoman and former princess Tessy Antony de Nassau and her husband Frank, and actor Marc Limpach. Tickets for the event cost 95 euros, including a four-course dinner. CYCLING – Belgian sprinter Tim Merlier won a battle of the fast men to take the first stage of Paris-Nice race yesterday. Th ebest Luxembourger was Alex Kirsch, who came in 35th place. The second stage today goes over 164 kilometers from Bazainville to Fontainebleau.

FOOTBALL – The Manchester United Manager Erik ten Hag says he is disappointed and angry after his team were beaten 7-0 by Liverpool. Mo Salah scored twice, making him Liverpool’s record Premier League scorer.

In the German Bundesliga, Leverkusen won 4-1 against Hertha and Wolfsburg and Frankfurt shared a 2-2 draw. In France, Marseilles won 1-0 against Rennes. And in Italy, AS Rome also won 1-0 against Juventus.

FORMULA 1 - And Max Verstappen has won the first Formula 1 Grand Prix race of the new season in Bahrain. The next race is in Saudi Arabia on March 19.

Northern parts of Luxembourg can expect snow today, while mixed rain and snow is likely across the rest of the country. Otherwise, it will be cloudy and cold. Morning temperatures start off between -2 and 0°C, before rising to a high of 5°C in the afternoon.
