Thousands of people flocked to Esch-sur-Alzette on Sunday for the 22nd Cavalcade, a carnival parade that is part of the city’s annual Escher Fuesent.

The parade started at 2.15pm and featured about 60 groups and 1,200 participants in colourful costumes and floats. Organisers expected around 25,000 spectators to line the streets and join the festivities.

The Cavalcade began in 2002 and has become a tradition in Esch-sur-Alzette, a city in southern Luxembourg that was once a hub for iron ore mining and steel production.

The Escher Fuesent is the carnival season in Esch. It usually takes place in March and lasts for three days. It includes various events and activities, such as concerts, parties, shows and games
