A brawl involving more than 40 individuals broke out on the beach of one of Belgium's favourite tourist destinations.
According to The Brussels Times, the fight started when a group of young people were told by a lifeguard not to sit on the breakwater. Refusing to leave, police were called and the brawl broke out. Some media write that refusing social distancing may have played a part in the fight.
A video of the fight, circulating on social media, shows sand, sun umbrellas and sun beds flying around. One police officer was hit with a parasol.
Police reinforcements arrived on the scene to help calm the situation. Mayor Daphné Dumery had called for a crisis meeting on Saturday evening: "This cannot continue. We must do everything possible to guarantee the safety of our beach and its visitors," she said.
Therefore, on Saturday evening, the decision was taken that tourists coming to Blankenberge for one day only are no longer welcome.
