Around 850,000 homes were without power on Thursday morning as Storm Nils swept across southern France, with red alerts issued for flooding on the Garonne River, high winds in the Aude region, and avalanches in Savoie, according to network operator Enedis

The operator has activated its Rapid Electricity Response Force (Fire), mobilizing 360 personnel to reach “the most affected regions”, namely Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Occitanie, with 485,000 and 318,000 homes without power, respectively.

The storm has claimed at least one life so far, a truck driver killed in an accident after a tree branch fell near Dax in the Landes region, where gusts exceeded 160 km/h during the night.
