The fire broke out on rue de Charonne (11th arrondissement) in a home located on the seventh floor of an eight-floor building, according to firefighters.
The fire broke out around 8.15pm, according to the prosecution, who confirmed the three deaths.
66 firefighters were on site to combat the flames, with 17 firefighting vehicles in operation.
The fire was under control and there was no risk of additional spread, a police source later told AFP.
A criminal investigation was opened for “destruction by fire or dangerous means” and “involuntary homicide”.
The sources interviewed by AFP were not able to communicate on the origins of the fire.
Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo sent her condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.
“I also extend my gratitude to the firefighters who intervened quickly and were able to contain the fire,” she added.
