The visit predominantly concerned bilateral relations between both countries. Bettel was received by President Andrés Manuel Lopez. The visit marked a special occasion, as the last Luxembourgish prime minister to visit Mexico was Pierre Werner in 1980.
Bettel highlighted that the two countries had a strong relationship, anchored in long-term investment. He noted that the invitation was both a marker of faith in that relationship and would allow the countries to open new paths of cooperation.
On 9 March, the mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, appointed Bettel an honorary citizen of the capital.
Bettel went on to say that despite the differences between Luxembourg and Mexico City, the two capitals share the same values and principles. He added that he would cherish the decoration as a symbol of both the close relationship between Mexico City and Luxembourg and the two countries.
