A walker encountered a wolf near Wincrange on 22 January while walking her dogs.
The wolf ran away shortly after being spotted. It then crawled underneath a barbed wire, where hairs were left hanging. A hair sample was later examined at the Senckenberg Institute in Gelnhausen, Germany.
The reference laboratory confirmed on Wednesday that the animal spotted in Troine, near Wincrange, was indeed a male Central European wolf.
The Nature and Forest Administration has reminded people to communicate any potential wolf sightings to wolf@anf.etat.lu.
