"It is my duty as parliamentarian to win back trust in democracy," said Chamber of Deputies president Claude Wiseler at the New Year's Reception, "to fight for democracy and the rule of law."

Wiseler noted in his speech that 52% of the population distrusts politics, while 40% is interested in politics, according to statistics from Polindex.

Earning more trust would begin with the own behaviour of people in the chamber, their commitment and work. It were essential that political discussions are held in the chamber and that deputies come prepared. Additionally, a discussion should be held about the time and content of speeches, according to the chamber president.

If 2023 was the year of promises, 2024 is the year to implement what was promised, underlined Wiseler. With two elections, 2023 had been an interesting and complicated year for politicians, with many diversions and changes.

The general secretary of the chamber, Laurent Scheeck, also reflected back on 2023, aiming for stability in the five years ahead. He asked for the chamber to remain proactive, agile, have trust and cooperate with one another.

There would have been a number of administrative reorganisations in the chamber, for example in communication, logistics and cooperation between employees. The Chamber has 162 employees, including 17 employees.

“The chamber has gained credibility through more transparency and better deontology rules,” Laurent Scheeck remarked.
